Some spring pics with the new camera

Sunny Days!!!

This weekend was fantastic!!!!

Saturday morning I had to interview a visitor at the college, which went fine. It was kind of nice to be up and moving early on such a warm sunny morning. I then went home and began sewing a table runner for my coffee table. My bobbin ran out, so I stopped there. Then, my friend Alyssa, from Duluth came to visit. I haven't seen her since this summer, so we had lots to catch up on. Since it was so nice and sunny, we walked from my apartment to campus and I showed her around. Then we headed downtown for some great lunch and then walked through downtown stopping in all the fun little shops on the way. It was beautiful outside. 57 degrees!!! Near the late afternoon, we headed back to my place and watched "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and gabbed some more. A little after nine Alyssa headed out and shortly after that, I was in bed. It was a great day. It felt so nice to thaw out a little!

Yesterday, I slept in, got up and made some berry muffins and hunkered down on the couch for a lazy morning. Then my friend Sarah called to invite me out to her new cabin for the afternoon. I was really excited to see her new place and to bring my camera to take a few shots of the wilderness. I stepped outside with my t-shirt, sweatshirt and vest on, only to notice I was too warm with the vest and sweatshirt!! It was a roasting 64 degrees! I cannot even tell you how great it felt! On my way out to Washburn, to the cabin, I stopped along the lake to take a few pictures of some geese enjoying the newly opened water. Then I blasted some great tunes and headed out to the cabin. Sarah and her boyfriend, Bob, just moved out to this little one room cabin in the woods with a little loft. There is electricity, but no running water. When I got there Bob was working on something outside in the shed, Rone, their husky was basking in the sun and Sarah came out of the cabin to great me with her new pixie haircut. Sarah and I hugged and caught up on the past few days and I got the grand tour of the cabin. It is definitely small, but warm, sunny, and cozy. It is perfect. We even went to check the outside out. It was really cool! haha. Seriously. There are 3 windows in it, so it's really nice and sunny, and they put woodchips in the hole when they are done using it, so it actually has a nice woodsy smell to it. By far, the nicest outhouse, I have ever seen. Then, Sarah, Bob, Rone and I headed down to Big Rock Park, just down from their cabin with cameras in hand. It was soooooo pretty. The park is along a stream in the middle of the woods. It was so nice and warm and all the ice was melting. It felt wonderful!!!! After a few hours of exploration and picture taking, we headed back to the cabin to BBQ up some brats. Grant and Claire then came and joined for a summery meal with potatoe salad and everything. It was just what I needed. A wonderful weekend!!!

Today, I am only here at work until lunchtime and then I am packing up and running errands in town before heading down to Wassau for the night, on my way for Fort Wayne, IN for a college fair. I am looking forward to getting out of the cubicle though and hot tubbing at the hotel.

Everyone Gets a Crabby Day Now and Then, Right?

I think I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning! :(
I was really, really hoping for a delayed start today. Yesterday we were supposed to get dumped on. We did get some snow, but nothing too bad. I am sick of the snow, but wouldn't mind it if we got time off of work. Bummer! This morning I kept having dreams about being late for work, when I woke up, I realized I must have turned off my alarm and I really was running late! I checked my phone, but there were no messages, meaning no delayed start. So, I jumped out of bed, took a two minute shower, and threw my clothes and make-up on. Usually in the morning I throw my smootie batch in the microwave for a few minutes to thaw it out enough for me to scoop some into a cup. Well, my microwave is dead. So I heated it up in the oven! It worked though! Then I went out to start my car to warm it up, there was a thick layer of ice on the windshield and my wipers were crusted down. So, I got that all cleared and ran back in to take my smoothie out of the oven. After getting all that ready to go and throwing everything in my bag, I ran out the door. My neighbor was out there too, trying to back her car out of our driveway with no luck. So, I tried my darndest to push her out. No luck, but I did, however, get covered in snow. I lent her my shovel while I scraped off the ice that had not yet defrosted off of my car. Finally she got out, but I was worried that I would be stuck now. Luckily, my car is a beast and it was not a problem. Once I got to work, I just felt blah; probably a mixture of stress, lack of sleep, and winter blues again. Oh well. But, I did get a good deal on a beginning belly dancing video, so I ordered that and feel a little more cheery. I am just ready to learn some more moves and thought this might be a fun at-home workout to do when the weather is yucky. Plus it was really cheap and it's always fun to have something to look forward to getting in the mail.
Anyways, hopefully, the day won't drag on too long. I have to head straight to the gym for my 4 hour shift after this. Ugh.

A Great Weekend!!

Saturday morning, I got up, cleaned around my apartment a little and headed out to Duluth. It was wonderful! I met up with some old friends from college. It was just what I needed. And it was a gorgeous sunny day, which made everything perfect. After hanging out, I had so many things rushing through my head. I thought a lot about the past and the memories I had in Duluth as well as the future and the hopes I have. Sometimes, it's wonderful to have a day like that, just to think things through.
Afterward, I went to Best Buy to pick up my new camera!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! I could not wait to pick it up. So, be assured, there will be plenty of pictures to come. I am super excited to check it all out. I bought the camera, a camera case, and an extra battery for it. I received my tax return on Friday, so I figured, why not get the things I have waited for now, when I have the chance. So, I also bought a GPS. If you know me at all, you know that I don't have the keenest sense of direction. I will be heading out next week for a college fair in Indiana, and I have to drive through Chicago. Then two weeks later I am driving to Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, MIchigan. A few weeks after that I am heading out for my trip to Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia. Needless to say, I thought this might be a good time to learn how to work a GPS. I bought the cheapest one, with just the basics, but that is all I really want anyway. Then I ran to TJ Maxx. I love that store for their cheap decorating stuff. I bought a kind of fancy looking bird cage for 14 bucks there for my living room. It can be really hit or miss, but I love looking. I ended up heading home around 8 or 9ish. I was pooped by the time I got back but had so many thought in my head that I couldn't sleep. So I painted my new bird cage. It was an off-white color, but it didn't stand out at all, so I painted it bright red. Then it was off the bed.
Sunday, despite loosing an hour of sleep due to the time change, I woke up bright and early. I got some major cleaning done, which was a little difficult since my sink is clogged and has a nice little pool of mucky water in it. Yuck! I am hoping that the maintenance lady gets it fixed today. Sick. Anyway, I cleaned my bedroom and started on the living and then got ready to head to Ashland High School's "My Fair Lady". The 3 friends I invited weren't able to come, so I went by myself. I really don't mind doing that stuff alone though, so it was fine. It was good, but long! It was 3 and 1/2 hours! Whew! After that I ran to Walmart to get a memory card for my camera. I spent the rest of the evening cleaning up and playing with my camera. Did I mention how much I love it?!

The Shelves in My Livingroom

I got the idea for this cute vase arrangement from a friend's blog site. The same day my mom sent me an email with a picture of a similar one from a magazine. I loved the way they looked and I needed a little height, so I decided to try it out.

Retro Birdhouses I Made for My Shelves (don't look too close at the paint job though!)

My Pillows

This are the pillows I sewed the other weekend when I was at home. They are made with the fabric I bought from Australia a long time ago. I am really happy with how much color they bring into my living room!
I attempted to make salmon for dinner last night. I found a recipe where you put salmon in a baking pan with milk and fresh dill. It was okay, but not very flavorful at all. Bummer. I found another recipe for citrus salmon, maybe I will try that one next.
Belly dancing was really fun last night! Kate, my physical therapist and Pilates teacher, came with me. It was really fun to have her there. We worked on our muscle isolations last night. I am slowly improving! I now feel like I have better understanding to how my body moves, and how to isolate certain muscles to make them move. I still have a long way to go, but I am getting there! We then worked on our Shakira song. Kate picked it up really fast. It is so fun!! I love it! We only have a minute down right now, but I want to learn the whole thing!!! Afterwards, Kate and I picked up Claire and we headed out for our Thursday night girl time. Ashley and Sarah, who usually come weren't there tonight, not sure why. But it was a good chance to us to get to know Kate. I really like her tons and cannot wait to hang out again!! I invited both the girls to come and see the high school's production of "My Fair Lady" and then come over to my apartment for pizza afterward. I haven't had anyone over to my apartment in a long time. I wanted to have it all cleaned and finish decorating it before any saw it. It's decorated now, but the cleaning part will come this weekend!
And I got my tax return today! YAY!!! I think I am finally going to go and buy the camera I have been wanting for ages! I want one that is a little more "professional" that has a better zoom for nature pictures. I am heading to Duluth tomorrow, so I might get it then! Woo-hoo!!!!!!

I went in for my back consultation this morning bright and early. It turns out that I have no major problems, which I kinda knew anyway. So, that's good. My hips are uneven, however. My left hip is over an inch higher than my right making my legs uneven as well. I did some exercises with the PT that corrected it a bit for the time being. My spine is slightly rotated and I have knots and tension throughout my back. But these are things that can be easily corrected and worked on. They are checking to see what my insurance will cover. It my insurance does cover it, than I will go in so she can work out the knots (aka, a free massage), if not she said she'll do it after hours if I need it! Yay!

Also, in other good news, my bank account was credited the money I lost. Did I mention that earlier? Well, if not, I was checking my debit card account the other day and noticed 2 random charges for over 130 bucks that were not mine. Good thing I checked!! So I had to call and get a new card and file a report. Wells Fargo is now investigating. Apparently, some kids were taking pictures of people's credit cards with thier phones while they were waiting in line at WalmartI think about how many times I have my card out while I am waiting to swipe it! So, word of advice to everyone: check your bank statements!!!! People are getting sneaky, and rather than putting tons of stuff on a stolen card number, they will charge a few things here and there, knowing most people won't notice. Watch your statements!!!
Anyway, I got the money back now temporarily until the case is solved.

After work yesterday, I ran to Walmart to grab a few things. I then came home and re-made my smoothie mixture. About a month ago, I started making smoothies to bring into work to have for breakfast everyday. On the weekend, I buy some fresh and frozen fruit and yogart. I fill the blender with that stuff, add some ice, and a spoonful of either lemonaide or frozen lime concentrate (adds a little zing). A full blender of smoothie is enough for at least 5 days worth of breakfast. They are so good and I feel like I get to eat dessert every morning! But it is so healthy, I don't add ice cream or sugar at all. I like to change it up from time to time and add new things in. So, last weekend, I mixd frozen rhubarb, frozen strawberries, berry yougart, a quarter of a fresh watermelon, a few frozen peach slices, and some canned pineapple. It tasted pretty good, but is a little stringy-ish. I think that's thanks to the rhubarb and pineapple. The texture of it started to weird me out. So, last night I took what remained and added the rest of the frozen strawberries and peaches and some more yougart. And viola! Much better now.
I am a little stiff and sore today, but not nearly as bad as I thought I might be. I went to a Pilates class last night. Claire goes every week and asked me to come with her. So, with no expectations, I threw on my sweats and headed out to the class. The teacher is a girl our age, named Kate. She is super cute and nice and Claire and I both want to invite her to hang out more. She is from the area originally, but just moved back after years away at college. Anyways, the class consisted of Kate, Claire, a mom, her teenage daughter and me. It was only 1/2 an hour, but man!! It was intense! It was half-and-half cardio and core workout. I knew I was out of shape, but holy cow! I was sweating up a storm, but it was really good! The class is held at the Spine-Therapy Center in town and Kate is a Physical Therapist. I was talking to her about the back problems I had a few months ago. Not sure if I blogged about them or not, but in Nov/Dec I had a horrible migraine that lasted for over 3 days!! I have seriously been blessed in my life, where up until then I rarely ever had an inkling of a headache, and then BOOM! Major Migraine. I ended up going to the hospital because it was so bad and I had no clue what was going on. Well, come to find out, my back was spasming from my butt cheek all the way up to my neck. It was awful. I went in for a massage and the girl had to use her elbows to work out the softball sized knots under my shoulder blades. Anyway, so fast forward back to yesterday. I was talking to Kate about this and she said she would get me in for a free consultation. So, I am going in at 7 tomorrow before work. Not sure what will happen. I feel like my back is much better, but I'm not sure if it's because it really is or because my body is now used to it being out of line. So, we'll see.

This morning was nice because I got to sleep in. All of the admission counselors are working from 11:30-8 tonight instead of the usuall shift. We are having a "fun" call night tonight. Basically we are spending the evening making phonecalls to students who have shown interest in the past, in hopes of gettnig more applications in. The economy is hurting everyone and private colleges are no exception. Our application numbers are really down, so we are hoping that by making our online application free and calling students to tell them this, might help. But supposedly our boss is buying pop and pizza for dinner! So, that won't be too bad. I would have worked at the gym tonight anyway, but I got someone to cover. So, I will actually get back to my apartment an hour earlier than I would on a gym night. Which is good, because it is a disaster and needs to be cleaned bad!!

Slumdog Millionaire was a great movie!! I had high expectations just becuase I watched the Academy Awards and it won everything. I had also heard a lot about it. It was really good. It was really hard to watch, because most of the kids in the film were taken out of the slums. It was disturbing in so many ways, but powerfully written. I would recommend it for sure. It is the kind of movie that you leave the theater thinking about. I realize even more now, how amazingly blessed I am to live where I do. When I am stuggling with finances and feel stressed out, I just need to think about people who are less fortunate.

I also finished my paintings! I am super excited. I just have one other project I want to do in my living room to complete the whole look. Like I said before, I will take pictures of everything soon. I am really excited!

Monday, March 2, 2009

This weekend was so nice. Saturday morning I got up to the sun shining through my bedroom windows. Around noon, I headed south to Shell Lake, WI for some much needed girl time with my college roomates and their sisters. My good friend Katie, and her sister Jess, and I met up at "The Potter's Shed" to make some mosaics. We had a blast! It was so good to catch up with them and just have fun making art. Unfortunately, we didn't take into consideration that the place closed at 4. I didn't start glueing my pieces down until quarter after 3, and the other girls where in the same place as me. We were almost a bit stressed about how we were going to get it all done, but we did and everything looked great! I mosaic-ed a cupboard door that I turned on it's side and put hooks on it. I used both glass pieces and buttons and put two flowers in the middle of the door with a swirl of buttons and then random glass around all of that. I will post pics soon. They do the grouting there, so I won't get it for a few weeks.
After the mosaic experience, we headed to pick up the other girls. Kayla and her sister Amanda were helping paint their parents new house. It is gorgeous!! They are building on their own private lake. I saw the house a few months ago, but it was only the framework at that time, now the walls and ceilings have been put up. It is going to be amazing! The five of us girls and Katie's husband Ryan, went out for dinner that night and had a chance to catch up on everything. Then it was time for the main event; the real reason for our girlie get-together. We went to the "Miss Shell Lake Pageant". It was hilarious!! Katie and Kayla were both former Miss Shell Lake royalty, which made it even more fun. This year's theme was "Hick Town". The posters around town for the pageant were hand drawn pictures of cowboy boots with the contestants names on sherriff badges. When we got to the pageant, the decorations consisted of a haybale and paper cutout cowboy boots, and the ticket stand was wrapped in faux barn wood paneling. It was great. The show started off with the MC stumbling over her announcement of the opening number. The 4 contestants danced to "Boot Scootin' Boogie." They were all a little off and we weren't sure if it was a lack of talent or if it was intentional. It was a treat. The talents consisted of one girl singing to a backed up tape and was off just enough that you could hear the voice on the tape. The next girl's talent was photography. She had numerous photos of fireworks on a slideshow presentation and a handful of out-of-focus shots of her friends and pets. The third contestant did a hip-hop dance. She had been taking dance for one year so far, so it was a little off, but decent. The last girl played her trumpet, and about 4 minutes through her song, she botched up and asked to start over. I felt so bad for her!! But in the end, she ended up being crowned Miss Shell Lake 2009. It was quite the show!! Afterwards, we went back to Katie's family's house and hung out.
Yesterday morning Katie and her family headed out to the 8:15 church service, so I threw on my clothes and headed home. I was feeling kind of blah and a little down on the way home. Maybe because it's always hard to leave my friends. I got home just in time to hear the downstairs neighbor screaming her lungs out to her kids. I watched the kids climb into the car and they all took off with the mom. I was feeling kind of shaken up after all the drama and decided I needed to get out of the house. So, I went to Walmart to pick up some craft supplies. I got home and decided to read instead of craft and finished Twilight. It was pretty good! Then, I fell asleep on the couch for a few hours and got up feeling a little groggy and out of it. But a quick phonecall to Katie woke me up again. Then I started working on a painting for the living room that I have wanted to do for ages. It turned out really cute! I'll post pics soon. Then Claire and I went out to dinner to catch uo on our weeks. It was a pretty busy weekend, but also really great!
Tonight I have a work-free evening!!!! Woo-hoo!! I am hoping to finish another painting and then some friends and I are planning to head out to see "Slumdog Millionaire." I heard it's great, so I am excited!
